2018. PayPal Checkout improves personalization
PayPal introduced new checkout technology for e-commerce sites that will dynamically present the most relevant payment method for each customer. That is, instead of retailers having to litter their checkout page with a variety of payment options, PayPal Checkout’s new “smart payment buttons” will update to display the right set of options for each customer in each geography. That means retailers can more easily include alternative payment methods, like local wallets and country-specific options, alongside a PayPal button.
2017. Magento introduced Instant Purchase Checkout
Magento is now the first commerce leader to offer an ‘Amazon-like’ experience as a standard feature, now available in the latest release of Magento Commerce. The new Instant Purchase feature provides returning customers with a faster checkout experience by using previously-stored payment credentials and shipping information to skip checkout steps. When a customer selects the “Instant Purchase” button on a product detail page, they are immediately taken to a confirmation page where they can place the order. Instant Purchase leverages Braintree Vault, available with Braintree Credit Card, Braintree PayPal, and PayPal Payflow Pro for stored payment information. Consistent with Magento flexibility, merchants can easily modify the Instant Purchase button text and business logic to customize the experience for their needs.

2014. Visa rebrands V.me to Visa Checkout
Visa wants to make the process of paying for goods on your phone or iPad as easy as swiping your credit or debit card at an offline retailer. To do so, it’s adapting to Internet retail with the launch of Visa Checkout, a new payment option that will allow users to speed through the online checkout process in just a few steps. Visa is introducing a username and password system for making payments, which would eliminate the need to enter a 16-digit credit card number. With Checkout, users simply select the Visa Checkout button on the merchandise page and enter a username password and select their card. Visa then automatically fills the payment form with their credit card and shipping information. PayPal has offered a similar payment option for years, and more recently Amazon launched a competing payment button.
