2020. Cisco acquires Modcam to make Meraki smart camera smarter
Cisco announced that it has acquired Swedish startup Modcam and is making it part of its Meraki smart camera portfolio with the goal of incorporating Modcam computer vision technology into its portfolio. Today, while Meraki has smart cameras that include motion detection and machine learning capabilities, this is limited to single camera operation. What Modcam brings is the added ability to gather information and apply machine learning across multiple cameras, greatly enhancing the camera’s capabilities.
2018. Cisco Meraki Introduces MV12 Cloud-Managed Security Cameras
Cisco has flown relatively under the radar over the past several years in the physical security space but it is looking to make its presence felt once again with the debut of its MV22 and MV72 cameras as well as its new MV Sense analytics tool. The MV series of solutions are from the Meraki business unit, which was acquired by Cisco in 2012. The new cloud surveillance system essentially eliminates all of the infrastructure associated with a typical enterprise video deployment. Everything is managed through one web interface called the dashboard. There are no servers of any kind for any of our products; there are no virtual machines or software packages. Everything is managed from our cloud infrastructure, which we operate and maintain for all of our customers as a service.
2012. Cisco acquires wi-fi security startup Meraki for $1.2B
Cisco has acquired cloud infrastructure startup Meraki for $1.2 billion. Meraki provides mid to large-size companies and organizations with on-premise mesh Wi-Fi networking and security devices plus the software to manage them. The tech makes it easy and affordable to run a powerful cloud network without a bulky IT department. It’s also designed to help businesses adapt as their employees increasingly access corporate networks from smartphones and tablets. Once the acquisition closes, Meraki will look into expanding Cisco’s scale-centric enterprise offering, but for now will continue focusing on the mid-market and convenience.
