Signal vs Wickr in our news:

2021. AWS has acquired encrypted messaging service Wickr

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is getting into the encrypted messaging business. The company has just announced that it has acquired secure communications service Wickr — a messaging app that has geared itself towards providing services to government and military groups and enterprises. It claims to be the only “collaboration service” that meets security criteria set out by the NSA. AWS will continue operating Wickr as is, and offer its services to AWS customers. The AWS division currently offers communications service Chime, which enables organizations to meet, chat, and place business calls. But it’s a little-known product that’s failed to have the impact of rival services Slack or Microsoft Teams, and it doesn’t focus on end-to-end encryption as Wickr does.

2020. Signal adds encrypted group video calls

Signal, the free and open source encrypted messaging app, launched end-to-end encrypted group video calls. The feature, which at present is limited to five people per call, allows members of a Signal group to pop in and out of an ongoing call at will. Notably, unlike Facebook's Messenger Rooms, group video calls on Signal are end-to-end encrypted. In an existing Signal group, you only need to tap the video icon in the upper-right corner of the screen to start the call. Once you've done so, group members can join or leave the call at their pleasure.

2017. Encrypted messenger Signal adds voice and video calling

A new beta version of Signal, the encrypted chat application, has enabled voice and video calling. According to the app’s changelog, beta users are able to try the new feature with others who also have the setting enabled. Though aimed at the privacy-minded, Signal competes more broadly with apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Google Duo, all of which support video calling. These features are now considered table stakes for those entering the messaging app space with their own alternative clients. Signal may be catching up with the rest of the market, in terms of feature set, but the app struggles with adoption because it lacks the network effects of other, more social apps. This, of course, is by design. Because of its security and privacy focus, Signal doesn’t pull in your contacts from other social networks, upload your address book, or offer fun tools like Snapchat’s Snapcodes to make adding new friends easier.

2015. Secure messenger Wickr will focuse on business version

Wickr, the messaging app that offers consumers an encrypted, more secure alternative to mainstream services like Facebook, is splitting its operations in two: a for-profit division that will double down on Wickr as a business, specifically targeting enterprises and as a paid, white-label service; and a non-profit Wickr Foundation, dedicated to advocating secure and safe communications among groups that might need it most, such as children, human rights activists and journalists. Company says that the business side will be looking at ways of selling “Encryption as tools for those who need it. Wickr is well suited to help enterprises a lot, and we are talking with a lot of companies to use the core technology and extend the functionality to make it an enterprise grade app, or tool they can use to build their own apps.
