2015. Microsoft integrates Cortana into Power BI service



Microsoft announced that Cortana personal assistant is coming to Power BI, its business intelligence tool that, it’s worth noting, already had some natural language query capabilities. Once connected, Cortana can now answer questions from your Power BI data sets for written and spoken queries like “revenue for the last quarter” or draw you a chart for the “number of opportunities by team.” Users have to ensure that Cortana has access to their Power BI data sets by enabling this new feature in Power BI.  With Cortana Analytics, Microsoft also currently offers a more bespoke solution for enterprises that focuses less on the Cortana client and more on the machine learning and automation services that power Cortana.


2014. Tibco to update its Business Intelligence software



In September middleware analytics provider TIBCO announced that it will be acquired by a private equity firm Vista Equity Partners, and it was the largest tech buyout this year. But Tibco isn't just waiting for this takeover to close. At its annual Tibco Now conference Tibco freshened its vision for business analytics with plans for updates for Spotfire and Jaspersoft (which TIBCO acquired in April this year). It also announced a new product called Engagement Flows designed to give marketers the ability to send personalized offers based on recent customer activity, inventory, historical interactions and data from third-party sources. The new products build on a new version of its Fast Data platform, which Tibco said would enable its customers to interpret and act on data in any location — on-premises, in the cloud or coming from the Internet of Things (IoT).
