2022. Hourly.io banks $27M for its new approach to providing workers comp and payroll for hourly wage workers

Hourly.io — which has built an app that tracks working hours, generates payroll and then calculates and assigns workers’ compensation insurance to individuals based on that — has closed in on $27 million in funding. Hourly.io is far from being the only startup tackling this general market, nor the specific task of fixing the very basic problems of organizing and paying these workers. Others that have raised money to grow their businesses include team management app Homebase; Fountain for sourcing and hiring hourly workers; another platform for matching shift workers to employers, Shiftsmart; Wagestream, a financial “super app” for waged workers; When I Work to manage shift scheduling; and many others.

2021. Memory.ai, the startup behind time-tracking app Timely, raises $14M

Memory.ai, which is building AI-based productivity tools to help you with your own time management, has raised $14 million. The startup, based out of Oslo, Norway, initially made its name with an app called Timely, a tool for people to track time spent doing different tasks. Aimed not just at people who are quantified self geeks, but those who need to track time for practical reasons, such as consultants or others who work on the concept of billable hours. Timely has racked up 500,000 users since 2014, including more than 5,000 paying businesses in 160 countries. The startup’s big technical breakthrough with Timely was to figure out an efficient way of tracking time for different tasks, not just time worked on anything, without people having to go through a lot of data entry.

2021. Productivity analytics startup Time is Ltd. raises $5.6M

Productivity analytics startup Time is Ltd. that wants to be the Google Analytics for company time, has raised a $5.6 million. We are all familiar with inefficient meetings, pestering notifications chat, video conferencing tools and the deluge of emails. Time is Ltd. says it plans to address this by acquiring insights and data platforms such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Zoom, Webex, MS Teams, Slack and more. The data and insights gathered would then help managers to understand and take a new approach to measure productivity, engagement and collaboration, the startup says.

2017. Intuit acquired time-tracker TSheets

Intuit, the company behind products like QuickBooks, acquired TSheets, a time-tracking service and employee scheduling app with over 35,000 customers for $340 million. There’s an obvious overlap between the markets for QuickBooks and TSheets, both of which mostly target small to medium businesses. Indeed, Intuit tells us that the companies already share 12,000 customers. Clearly this isn’t a play to acquire new customers, but to build out the QuickBooks ecosystem and it’s worth noting that TSheets already offers an integration with QuickBooks. In talking to Intuit over the last few months, this idea of removing friction is very much at the heart of the company’s current product plans, especially with regard to QuickBooks.

2014. Timely turns your calendar into time tracker

Timely is a time-tracking app that doesn't focuse on specific tasks or projects, but on more high-level view of your work week. You estimate how long you’ll take to work on a project on an upcoming day and use that to decide how much more work to take on or meetings to have. Timely is available on iOS and the web, and today it's releasing a new feature that lets you import meetings and events from your calendar so that you don’t have to enter the same information across multiple apps. Timely is free to use as an individual, but you’re limited on the number of projects you can manage at once. It makes the most sense to use Timely as a team or company on one of its paid plans, which start at $49 per month for a team of five.
