2021. Intuit to acquire Mailchimp
Intuit is buying email marketing company Mailchimp for $12 billion. Intuit is not a well-known player in the email marketing space. Mailchimp buy would allow it to “accelerate two of Intuit’s previously shared strategic Big Bets: to become the center of small business growth; and to disrupt the small business midmarket. Intuit’s QuickBooks service is a well-known product in the SMB space. Presumably Intuit reckons that it can sell more services to its existing small business customers. It still feels like a bit of a stretch, but we presume that the eggheads have come to the conclusion that ensuing corporate synergies will more than compensate for the sticker shock that the deal includes.
2021. Klaviyo’s next-gen email marketing platform engorges on $320M
Klaviyo is not as much of a household name right now as Constant Contact and Mailchimp, but it is absolutely on its way to the paramount of the next-generation of email marketing startups. The company has raised $320M Series D. Klaviyo integrates natively with customer data sources and build the technology to house data at scale, create experiences across channels, and measure the results. 2021. MessageBird acquires SparkPost for $600M
MessageBird, a communications platform out of the Netherlands, had a busy day today with two huge announcements. For starters, the company got an $800 million extension on its $200 million Series C round. It then applied $600 million of the extension to buy email marketing platform SparkPost. MessageBird had an email component prior to the acquisition, but the chance to pick up the largest email provider in the world was too good to pass up. With the company in the fold, it enables MessageBird, which has mostly been in Europe and Asia, to get a stronger foothold in the U.S. market.
2021. SMB email marketing platform ActiveCampaign raises $240M
ActiveCampaign, which has built what it describes as a “customer experience automation” platform — providing a way not just to run digital campaigns but to follow up aspects of them automatically to make sales and marketing work more efficiently — has closed a $240 million round of funding. The company’s tools fit into a wider overall trend in the world of business: automation, built on the back of new, cloud-based technology, is being adopted to carry out some of the less interesting and repetitive aspects of running a business. In the case of sales, an example of what ActiveCampaign might provide is a way for an e-commerce business to identify when a logged-in customer might have ‘abandoned’ a visit to a site before buying a product that had already been searched for, or clicked on, or even added to a cart. In these cases, it sends an email to customers reminding them of those items, with options for other follow-ups, in the event that the choice was due to being distracted or having second thoughts that might be persuaded otherwise.
2021. Lob raises $50M for its physical direct mail platform
Lob, a startup promising to help businesses deliver physical mail more quickly and affordably, and with more personalization, has raised $50 million in Series C funding. There are two main categories of physical mail that Lob continues to support for its customers. First, there’s mail sent for “a regulatory purpose, a compliance purpose” — in other words, mail that businesses are legally required to send in printed form. Second, there’s direct mail sent as marketing, which many companies are rediscovering. The company estimates that its platform has been used to deliver mail to one in two U.S. households.
2021. Text marketing startup Voxie raises $6.7M
Voxie, a startup that wants to replace email marketing with personalized text conversations across a large customer base has raised $6.7M. Compared to other text marketing tools, messages sent via Voxie feel like a real, personalized conversation — even though 80% to 90% are actually automated, with the rest of the messages written by people. Plus, Voxie will allow businesses to send their messages from a normal 10-digit phone number (rather than the more common five-digit numbers used for marketing).
2020. Letterhead wants to be the Shopify of email newsletters
Letterhead is slicing through the vast market of existing email SaaS products, betting that a cross-section of revenue and collaboration needs are not being met properly for newsletter creators of all types. Instead, it puts all ad sales, paid subscriptions and newsletter content management into a single, streamlined product. Letterhead’s tools include the ad system, a new paid subscription feature that lets you do things like add paywalled subsections of emails, easy-to-use text editing and template formatting, and soon, analytics.

Marketing automation platform Klaviyo wants to change the way marketers interact with data, giving them direct access to their data and their customers. It makes it easier to customize the messages and produce better results. Investors apparently agree, awarding the company a $200 million Series C on a hefty $4.15 billion valuation. Klaviyo's platform combines the data, the ability to customize messages and the use of machine learning to keep improving that, and it helps it to compete with the largest mailing platforms.
2020. Email creation startup Stensul raises $16M
Stensul, a startup aiming to streamline the process of building marketing emails, has raised $16 million in Series B funding. Creating a marketing email can take weeks. With Stensul, that process can be reduced to just two hours, with marketers able to create the email on their own, without asking developers for help. Things like brand guidelines are already built in, and it’s easy to get feedback and approval from executives and other teams. Stensul has recently grown to more than 100 employees, with new customers like Capital One, ASICS Digital, Greenhouse, Samsung, AppDynamics, Kroger and Clover Health.
2020. Sendinblue, an all-in-one digital marketing platform, raises $160M
Sendinblue, the French startup that has built a platform to help small and medium organizations run all of their marketing — from email, SMS and chat marketing through to automation services, Facebook ads and retargeting — has picked up $160 million in funding. While the company’s bread and butter and focus will always be SMBs, in the meantime it’s also picked up a number of high-profile and high-end customers too, including Louis Vuitton, the candy giant Haribo, Fujitsu, Amnesty International and Greenpeace.
2020. Mailchimp launches new AI marketing tools
Mailchimp has launched of a set of AI-based tools that give small businesses easy access to the same kind of capabilities that their larger competitors now use. That includes personalized product recommendations for shoppers and forecasting tools for behavioral targeting to see which users are most likely to buy something, for example. But there’s now also a new AI-backed tool to help business owners design their own visual asset (based in part on its acquisition of Sawa), as well as a tool to help them write better email subject lines.
2020. Sarbacane, maker of Mailify, raises $27M for marketing tools
Sarbacane, the French company that makes the Mailify SaaS-based email and text marketing platform, along with other martech software, has raised $27 million, funding that it plans to use to continue building more technology in areas like AI-based marketing automation, as well as to continue its international expansion. It competes with the likes of Mailchimp and has some 10,000 customers on its books already, with a heavy emphasis on small and medium businesses, but also government agencies and a number of big names such as Christian Dior, L’Occitane, Mondial Relay and Warner Music.

Movable Ink, a company that helps businesses deliver more personalized and relevant email marketing, is announcing that it has raised $30 million in Series C funding. 2020. Levitate raises $6M for its ‘keep-in-touch’ email marketing solution aimed at SMB
Levitate, a marketing platform and customer relationship solution provider, has raised an additional $6 million for its AI-powered software offering small businesses an alternative to mass blast emailing. Levitate’s software plays in the same general ballpark as buzzy startup Superhuman, which also provides a set of advanced email tools for inbox triage and managing important relationships. But Superhuman does so by offering its own (pricey) email app. Levitate, by comparison, focuses more specifically on a toolset designed to help businesses or even individual entrepreneurs keep in touch with clients, prospects and other referral sources. This includes tools that let you create rules about who you want to stay in touch with and how, reminders that push you to keep up with your relationships, customizable email templates, relationship analytics and others.
2020. Zoho Campaigns integrates with Zapier
Zoho Campaigns new integration with Zapier, a web-based integration platform, allows you to automate your various business workflows, simplifying the overall process. In a Zap, Campaigns can be associated either with a trigger or an action. Put simply, you can use a trigger to make data flow from Campaigns to other applications (and vice versa) where an action is performed.
2018. Mailchimp partnered with Square to launch shoppable landing pages
Email newsletter service Mailchimp announced a partnership with Square that will allow its users to create landing pages with built-in e-commerce features. These shoppable landing pages are meant to give businesses a new sales channel to sell things like limited-edition goods or run-targeted promotions. Mailchimp’s landing pages have been around a while. Until now, though, they were mostly meant to capture additional email addresses or link people to a store. Now, with this new partnership, customers will be able to build a full shopping flow with built-in payments right into these pages. To make this easier, Mailchimp is offering a number of pre-designed templates and a drag-and-drop builder. Square will charge a flat processing rate and Mailchimp will offer this service for free.

Communications platform Twilio acquired the API-centric email platform SendGrid for about $2 billion. Twilio’s current focus is on omnichannel communication, and email is obviously a major part of that. And while it offers plenty of services around voice, video and chat, email hasn’t been on its radar in the same way. This acquisition now allows it to quickly build up expertise in this area and expand its services there.

2017. Email Marketing company SendGrid raised $131 million
SendGrid, the marketing email company, raised $131 million after pricing its IPO at $16, above the expected range of $13.50 to $15.50. The company begins trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, under the ticker SEND. SendGrid helps businesses send marketing emails. It says in its IPO filing that it has processed more than one trillion emails. SendGrid says competes with SparkPost, MailChimp and divisions of Amazon, Oracle and Salesforce.
2017. Mailchimp’s marketing automation tools are now available for free
Mailing service MailChimp offeres a number of more advanced marketing tools; for example, one that allows its users to follow up with online shoppers. Starting today, these advanced marketing automation services are available for free to all MailChimp users, including those on the company’s free plan. With this newly free service, any online business can now easily create an automatic email that goes out a day after somebody abandons a virtual shopping cart, for example, or a day after somebody makes a first purchase. Similarly, they can set up a series of welcome emails or use the service for more transactional messages like receipts, shipping updates or invoices.
2017. MailChimp combines email marketing with Facebook Ads
MailChimp has ventured out of its email marketing comfort zone with a Facebook advertising integration. Users of the email marketing platform can now create Facebook ads and track performance in the same platform. Using MailChimp’s intelligent segmentation to target recent customers or active subscribers, businesses can quickly create lookalike audiences in Facebook. Facebook Ad Campaigns will roll out "gradually," MailChimp officials said. It will be available to all customers by February 2.

French startup Mailjet just raised $11 million for its email delivery service that works for both marketing campaigns and transactional emails. Mailjet’s distinctive feature is that we tackle both markets — marketing and transactional. Transactional email services need to have a reliable API, send email as quickly as possible and never fail — Mailjet started with transactional emails. Marketing email services need to be able to send hundreds of thousands of emails even if it takes a few minutes, have a good reputation with Google, Microsoft or Yahoo so that your newsletter doesn’t end up in the spam folder, and provide tools to customize the design of your emails.
2015. Zoho Campaigns becomes multilingual
Email marketing service Zoho Campaigns is now translated into multiple languages. Along with English, you can now use Zoho Campaigns in Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese. For now only user interface is translated by Zoho invites users to desing multilingual templates also. This update comes as welcome news for users taking advantage of the Zoho Campaigns + Zoho CRM integration. Users can now use both products in the same language. Recently Zoho announced free 10-user CRM edition. Zoho Campaigns also provides attractive free option. You can start with 2,000 contacts and send up to 12,000 emails/month in the free plan.
2014. Sendwithus gets $2.3M to help marketers optimize transactional emails
Email marketing startup Sendwithus has raised $2.3 million in additional seed funding. The service offers tools like A/B testing to optimize transactional emails — i.e., emails for specific purposes and tied to specific events, such as “reset your password” and “thanks for signing up!”. Every company sends such emails, and customers are more likely to open them, and they’re messages that “most marketers don’t get access to and don’t even think about.” Sendwithus allows marketers to test different variations of those messages without having to go through a developer. More recently, Sendwithus has added segmentation capabilities, allowing businesses to drill down on specific groups in their customer database — for example users who received an activation email but didn’t activate. Sendwithus also integrates with email delivery services like SendGrid and Mailgun.
