Much like Square, the Chip & Swipe is ideally designed to work at a cashier station or out and about with a smartphone, and can be operated using one hand. The reader accepts Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Discover. Shopify says on a full charge the reader lasts 400 chip transactions or 700 swipes, and it can pair wirelessly with Android or Apple phones over Bluetooth. The reader is also being offered for free to new Shopify point-of-sale merchants, while existing customers will be able to pick one up for $29.
