2020. Squarespace adds support for memberships and paywalled content



Squarespace is adding a new monetization option for websites built on the platform: Member Areas, where businesses can charge for access to exclusive content. That could, of course, mean an online publication that wants to paywall some of its articles, but it could also mean a chef who wants to charge for access to cooking videos and recipes, or a fitness instructor hoping to make money from online classes. Squarespace also supports different membership tiers, as well as publishing member-only podcasts and newsletters. Site creators get access to CRM data on each of their members, with plans for more segmentation tools in the future.


2018. Google Sites now lets you publish protected content



Google has announced a key update to the new version of its Google Sites website-building platform, one that gives organizations more flexibility over who can access specific content. Now creators and admins can hand-pick who within an organization is able to view a particular site by entering individual names in the Invite People box and selecting “Specific people can view when published” from the drop-down menu. This is a key update, one that should encourage uptake of the new Google Sites by enabling organizations to maintain a degree of privacy over confidential information. For now, the feature is only available on the web, but Google said it will be landing in the Google Drive mobiles app on both Android and iOS in the coming weeks.

The new Squarespace Analytics app for iOS and Android offers access to key insights and website analytics from anywhere, at any time, making it even easier to incorporate analytics into daily workflows. The app presents rich and detailed business metrics in a clean, easy-to-use dashboard, reimagined for smaller screens. Check key metrics at a glance and drill down into more granular views to uncover actionable insights. Newly added metrics provide the full range of our desktop analytics in the convenience of a mobile app. You can view more historical data with an updated date picker, which now includes new time frames and the ability to set custom date ranges.

Squarespace introduced digital gift cards for Squarespace Online Stores, providing yet another way for merchants to drive sales and acquire new customers. In addition to increasing sales, selling gift cards can offer many other benefits for your business. They encourage customers to spend more. Even though gift cards are preloaded with a set amount, customers often spend more than the card’s value. They make last-minute shopping possible, build brand awareness and lower return rates. Digital gift cards can be purchased and redeemed just like any other product, making them a seamless addition to your store. This feature is available to all users on the Commerce Advanced plan in all countries and currencies supported by Squarespace Commerce.


2017. Squarespace adds checkout on your domain for Online Stores



Online Stores on Squarespace platform can now have secure checkout on domains. With Checkout on Your Domain, customers can shop in your store without being redirected to a third-party for checkout. The entire shopping experience will live on one domain, creating a more consistent look and a stronger sense of security. Checkout on Your Domain is available in the Advanced Commerce plan and is automatically active on sites with SSL enabled. SSL is free for all websites and can be enabled under Settings > Security & SSL. After setting your site to “Secure,” customers ready to purchase will be directed to a checkout page on your domain, like https://yourdomain.com/checkout.

2016. Totally rebuilt Google Sites features adaptive design and real-time collaboration


Google unveiled totally rebuilt version of its website builder for creating intranet - Google Sites. It's now deeply integrated with the rest of Google’s tools. You can easily insert documents from Google Docs, Slides, Sheets and the rest of the G Suite tools. It also directly integrates with Google Analytics. The new sites now also allows multiple users to collaboratively edit a site (using the same tech the company also uses in Google Docs). Admins can choose whether users are able to publish to the web or only able to make their pages available to users on their own domain. With this update, any pages you create in Sites will also automatically scale according to the screen size you are using — and its preview mode makes it easy to see what a site will look like on a phone, tablet and desktop. In order to make those sites look halfway professional, Google added six new themes to get you started.

SSL is now available for free on all Squarespace websites.The result is that millions of more domains on the Internet will be secured via SSL, our customers can take advantage of the confidence that secure websites bring users, and we will have helped the Internet take a huge step forward in promoting security by default. Squarespace is taking care of almost everything, making this an easy transition for customers. To seamlessly manage SSL certificates for all of our websites, they have partnered with Let’s Encrypt, a free and open certificate authority (CA) run for the public’s benefit that provides free SSL certificates. As an added benefit, websites hosted on Squarespace may enjoy a boost in search rankings.


2016. Squarespace introduced new analytics for e-commerce



Website creation platform Squarespace introduced new analytics features for its e-commerce businesses. Squarespace’s Commerce product was originally designed for businesses who saw e-commerce as a “secondary goal” of their website — say, a restaurant selling gift cards or a musician selling merchandise. Turns out, however, that selling online was central to many Squarespace customers, so the company revamped Commerce last year with those businesses in mind. Changes included new Commerce templates, a Commerce-specific mobile app and the promise of new analytics specifically for Commerce users — analytics that the company has now officially launched. The new Squarespace Analytics dashboard includes data on things like revenue, units sold, conversion rate, average order volume and revenue per visit.
