Adobe Spark vs Canva in our news:

2021. Canva is getting into video

Canva, the startup looking to make design accessible to everyone, has announced a video editing suite. The Canva video software offers a scene-focused interface, meaning that users can break down their video into easy-to-manage pieces. From there, they can trim scenes (coming soon), manage multiple audio tracks and use in-editor video previews to check their work. Canva emerged during the design rennaissance, around the same time that Sketch, Figma and InVision were crashing the Adobe party. Unlike the others, Canva focused on democratization of design, creating a UI that allowed anyone to make just about anything, from slide decks to t-shirts to social media assets.

2021. Adobe is buying Frame.io for $1.28B

Adobe is acquiring Frame.io, a video review and collaboration platform used by over a million customers, for $1.275 billion. Frame.io platform helps creative professionals streamline the video creation process by centralizing media assets, including dailies, scripts, storyboards, work-in-progress and more, while also allowing for frame-accurate feedback and comments, annotations and real-time approvals. The company additionally touts faster upload speeds than other cloud hosting services, like Vimeo, Box, Dropbox and others. Adobe said the combination of its creative software, including Premiere Pro and After Effects video editing products, and Frame.io’s review and approval functionality would “deliver a collaboration platform that powers the video editing process.” The Frame.io web platform was designed to be a part of its customer’s existing processes, by integrating with non-linear editing systems (NLEs) such as Adobe Premiere Pro.

2019. Canva introduces online video editing

Canva, the design company with nearly $250 million in funding, has today announced a variety of new features, including a video editing tool. The video editing tool allows for easy editing with no previous experience required, and also offers video templates, access to a stock content library with videos, music, etc. and easy-to-use animation tools. The company has also announced Canva Apps, which allows developers and customers alike to build on top of Canva. Thus far, Dropbox, Google Drive, PhotoMosh and Instagram are already in the Canva Apps suite, with a total of 30 apps available at launch.

2019. Graphic Design Software Canva launched enterprise product

Canva, the Australian-based design tool maker, announced that it has raised an additional $10 million to bring its valuation to $3.2 billion. Besides, the company is launching Canva for Enterprise. Thus far, Canva has offered users a lightweight tool set for creating marketing and sales decks, social media materials, and other design products mostly unrelated to product design. The idea here is that, outside of product designers, the rest of the organization is often left behind with regards to keeping brand parity in the materials they use. Canva is available for free for individual users, but the company has addressed the growing need within professional organizations to keep brand parity through Canva Pro, a premium version of the product available for $12.95/month.

2016. Adobe unveils Spark - creative suite for small/medium businesses

Small and medium-sized businesses now have more free ways to present their stories to customers, with Adobe’s recent announcement of its Spark suite of tools. In addition to web pages and social posts, the tools enable the creation of company event announcements, newsletters, lessons, flyers, brochures, small catalogs and explainer videos. The renamed iOS apps are Spark Post (formerly Adobe Post, released last year), a tool for creating and posting text and graphics to social networks. Spark Page (Adobe Slate from last year) is for generating web pages. Spark Video, called Adobe Voice at its birth in 2014, enables the creation of moving icons, photos, text and graphics, which Adobe calls “animated videos.”

2015. Online design platform Canva launched business version

Online graphic design platform Canva has launched Canva for Work, that allows organizations of any size to use Canva’s core feature set along with special features aimed at businesses, such as the ability to save and share a brand kit with the company’s logo and color palette. While the platform itself had simplified graphic design for the mainstream, business users still faced a number of pain points in their organizations. For starters, their in-house graphic designers were often over-stretched, having to make minor text edits for marketing teams, executives, social media teams and others. With Canva for Work, however, designers can instead now set up a variety of pre-made templates across varying file formats – presentations, posters, ads, letterheads, social media posts, and more. Then, others in the organization can customize these items with their own text and graphics. These materials can also be shared in a folder on Canva for easy access.
