01.11.16 Amazon Alexa comes to workspace via HipChat

Atlassian's HipChat gets integration with Alexa, the Amazon's AI-based personal assistant that lives in Echo smart speaker. The integration enables Alexa to initiate conversations proactively rather than simply respond to queries, as well as alert users when certain thresholds have been met or if irregularities arise. Users will be able to connect Alexa to their HipChat room and teach it commands to perform work tasks, such as checking a website’s status and deploying a previous version in case it’s down. HipChat is also upping its video options with enhancements that double the simultaneous number of users from 10 to 20.

2016 HipChat adds group video chat

Group chat service for business HipChat (that is called the Slack's main rival) has released built-in video conferencing system. It allows HipChat users to video chat with the click of one button and gives users more control on who they want to see. Prior to the update, users could video chat but they had to rely on a third-party integration, such as BlueJeans, HYFY and Google Hangouts. Those require having separate accounts, take more time to start and give users less control over who they see when. In March Slack developers also promised to add video and audio calls to their product.

2015 Atlassian acquired team chat Hall

Atlassian, that providers services like JIRA, Confluence and the group chat tool HipChat, has acquired Hall, a group chat service for businesses. Both HipChat and Hall currently offer free starter plans for an unlimited number of users in a given team. For advanced features Hall currently charges $4 per user/month while HipChat’s plans start at $2 per user/month. Unlike Hall, though, HipChat offers more advanced features like video chat and screen sharing. With Hall, the company is acquiring new users in financial services, real estate, professional services and similar industries where Hall found its niche since its launch in 2011. The company will shut down Hall on June 30th, but current Hall users can now migrate their users, messages and files to HipChat.

2015 Atlassian acquires Jitsi video chat maker to power HipChat

Atlassian announced that it has acquired BlueJimp the founder of the open-source chat and video conferencing tool Jitsi. BlueJimp’s technology will replace the current video chat technology that powers Atlassian’s HipChat video features, both in Atlassian’s hosted and on-premise versions. Atlassian promises to continue to support and develop the open source version of Jitsi going forward. Jitsi’s WebRTC-compatible Videobridge product is likely what Atlassian was mostly interested in. It’s a scalable video router that makes it easier for developers to build video chat services with multiple participants. WebRTC, after all, should make it easier for Atlassian to scale its video services and should make it easier — and more cost-efficient — for the company to offer its on-premise version of HipChat.

2015 Atlassian launched HipChat server

Atlassian has launched a new version of its team collaboration chat HipChat for enterprise users who want (or need) to run the service on their private networks. Enterprises can now install a virtual machine that runs HipChat. This version will include all the standard features that are now part of the tool, including the recently launched video chat functionality. Users who switch from the Atlassian-hosted version to HipChat Server won’t notice any major differences, with the exception that the server edition can be integrated with a company’s existing enterprise identity management services.
